The United States Newest Federal Holiday is today.
Juneteenth National Independence Day has long been celebrated by African Americans as the day Slavery officially ended in the United States with the Emancipation Proclamation, but it did not become a federal holiday until 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the act into law making it the first new federal holiday since the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in 1983.
Today being a Federal Holiday, all Federal Offices are closed today along with most banks and no mail delivery. Several states including Missouri also recognize today as a holiday for state employees. The City of Branson is one of the local government agencies that will be closed today in recognition of Juneteenth.
