Debra Diane Huenefeld Stein was born on April 2, 1954, in Troy, Missouri, to Leo and Jean (Walkup) Huenefeld. Debra graduated from Kirkwood High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree from Fontbonne University in St. Louis. She had planned to become a home economics teacher, but after an automobile accident altered the course of her life, she found other ways to share her talents and care for others. Her love of cooking and natural skill in the kitchen led her to work at a bakery in St. Louis, where she used her culinary talent in meaningful ways.
Debra married the love of her life, Joseph L. Stein on August 23, 1975 in St. Louis. She was a devoted wife and amazing mother to their daughter, Audra.
Debra spent many years working in food service in St. Louis before she and Joseph retired to Branson in 2006. In Branson, she continued to stay active and engaged, working at Walmart and on the Showboat Branson Belle.
Debra was a faithful member of Faith Lutheran Church in Branson, and her faith was an important part of her life. She enjoyed crocheting and making jewelry, and took great pride in the things she created by hand. She also loved writing letters to family and friends, a thoughtful expression that reflected her caring heart and desire to stay connected with the people she loved. Her cooking was not just her vocation but an expression of her love for others. She was especially well known for her famous pot roast, fried pork chops, and Christmas candy, which she generously shared with family and friends during holidays and gatherings. She was also fiercely competitive, loved playing spinner dominoes and found joy in a good challenge.
Debra passed away on August 25, 2026, in Forsyth, Missouri, at the age of 72.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph L. Stein, and by her parents, Leo and Jean Huenefeld. She is survived by her daughter, Audra Stein (Nathan Lawrence) of Nixa, Missouri; her brother, Alan Huenefeld of Montgomery City, Missouri; and her bonus grandson, Kaison. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends who will cherish her memory.
Debra’s life was one of quiet strength, kindness, and steadfast faith. She will be remembered for the warmth she brought into every room, the meals she prepared with love, and the many thoughtful ways she cared for others.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at Faith Lutheran Church in Branson. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am with a celebration of Debra’s life at 11:00 am with Rev. Joel A. Krueger officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Snapp-Bearden Funeral Home & Crematory, Branson.
